My newest-minted batch of milliners has just presented their final round of projects, and i can't deal with how awesome they are.

lydia5
Undergraduate Lydia Hanchett made this "copper topper" from Fosshape.

Undergraduate Megan Rutherford made this Lady Gaga hat from Wonderflex, matboard, and sequin fabric.

colleen4
First-year grad Colleen Dobson created this cloche from metallic horsehair braid, looped and spiraled on a block.

leah2
Second-year grad Leah Pelz created this pudding cap from leather, silk, and ethafoam.

whitney5
PRC Wardrobe Supervisor Whitney Vaughan carved a 24" fedora crown block and used it to make this printed felt hat.

corinne
First-year grad Corinne Hodges made this freeform straw hat.

denise45
First-year grad Denise Dietrich really wigged out over this project. (Back view.)

The bird in the cage actually moves! His battery pack is hidden under the floral ornaments.

Whitney Vaughan also presented a wild and wacky wig based on Versailles hair, except hers is a bit more abstract: a hairstyle made out of flowers!

Back view of Whitney's wig. I love the use of the airplane plant leaves to create the rows of curls here.

I would so totally wear that cloche. And I especially love the flower wig--I've kind of wanted to do something like that for a few years.

Thank you, as ever, for sharing these projects with us. I love seeing the creativity and craft that goes into all of this.

What kind of hair did Denise use? I made a Versailles-inspired wig last year and attempted to make my own wefts with jumbo braid (because I wanted to put streaks of color in it), and it was an unmitigated disaster. It barely held up through portfolio review despite numerous coats of clear-coat and everything else I could think of. Not to mention that I had to assemble and attach all the wefts in one session because it made such a huge mess... 4 colors of tangled hair all over the place.

She used Jumbo Braid, but instead of doing stitched wefts with it, she used this process which a couple of our other students developed, whereby you lay the hair out on waxed paper, smooth it AMAP using a wig hackle, then paint it with white glue. You let it dry overnight, then peel it off, flip it over, and do the same process on the other side. It basically makes these "sheets" of hair that you can then use to cover the base structure.

Isn't it? She worked from this archival image for the inspiration:

...but then I also found this one that's kind of a fun variation on the idea:

Wow, those are both amazing. I'm going to have to make one.
