Glove projects!

My Decorative Arts class turned in their first round of projects today, gloves! They do two pairs, one simple pair to get a feel for the strange process glovemaking requires, then a more complex pair in which they choose a more complex style, pattern, or challenging fabric (or leather).

Here are a few pix of some of their work:

Left: winter-themed simple gloves by senior undergraduate Michelle Bellamy.
Michelle did these in a nubby woven fabric with such sweet blue outseaming!
Right: houndstooth jersey simple gloves by PRC Wardrobe Supervisor Whitney Vaughan

First-year grad Leah Pelz has a funny idea of "simple."
She made these gloves alternating colors for each finger.

Here's what her pattern looked like! Cool!

Gauntleted work gloves in thick leather, also by Leah Pelz
Leah worked off a pattern originally developed by alum Jacki Armit,
pictured in this previous post.

I love these two-tone wool gloves by Whitney Vaughan!
Whitney worked from a research image of a great pair of 1960s leather gloves,
which inspired the seaming and placket placement.
We jokingly called them "the long bird gloves."

Gorgeous work! The two-tone wool are just inspired.

these are amazing. i've made my own gloves before and they are not easy. I am really impressed by the striped one.

My first complex gauntlets. In upholstry vynil. First sewing project I ever did. I was insane. Not nearly as nice looking as your student's, but not bad for a self-taught noob fumbling about trying to self pattern gloves for very large female hands.

Cool! Did you cut the pointy-scaly ornamentation on the gauntlets out of the same vinyl or is that some kind of trim or paillettes or...? Really great look, like "dragon skin" or something!

Yes, I was aiming for the dragon skin glove look. It's all vinyl. I had issues with the scales streching when I sewed them on. Viynil was easy to sew but it is unforgiving.

I cut all those scales by hand, which was time consuming.

These are all delightful in their own ways. The striped ones are amazing, the two-tone wool are gorgeous, and I'm charmed by the execution of the winter theme in the first pair. I always love seeing how your students envision and execute the concepts--thank you so much for sharing these projects.
