We were having a frivolous discussion at work about spontaneous accessorizing using random objects, and i thought that i might post a poll on the topic, just for fun.

This came about because we have a bunch of little fins and cones and barnacle-shaped sparkly bright objects that we're making, and people in the shop passing our tables inevitably pick them up and put them on. The most common usage is to put them on the head, like a hat. One of the first hands on the Pig Team however will take two of them and hold them up as a makeshift bra. In the ensuing discussion, i was reminded of the armorer i worked with for whom everything random and cool became an instant makeshift codpiece.

So, if you are the sort of person who grabs random items--from a horsehair pouf to a bunch of rubber grapes--and immediately sees the accessorizing potential, tell me:

I think that I would be inclined to do all three, or various other ways, dependent on the shape of the item. Like a banana makes no sense to put on my head, but it makes sense to wear it as a codpiece (for an obvious example). Whereas something more flat, like a starfish, I may way to use as a bra, or as a fascinator of sorts, because it's so wide and flat.

Now I feel comparatively dull and un-creative. But in my defense: Everything looks good as a hat! Even ships of the line, as you and many gentlewomen of the 18th century knew.

-- Oh, but I should have added: for the right size unusual item, nothing beats wearing it as a ring.

Earrings. I have worn all sorts of weird shit as earrings, or if there's only one, as a pin or pendant.

Depending on the item, I might be more inclined to attach it to my belt or try to pin it on as a brooch.

once upon a time a friend of mine came into the dining hall with the circular, 4" mercedez-benz emblem, which she said she'd found on the ground (rather than prized off someone's car.) She challenged us all to wear it, and said the best use would be rewarded with the object. Elizabeth tried winding it in her long hair, another put a shoelace through it for a necklace. I unsnapped the epaulet of my jacket and slipped it on. And wore there for years.

I think humans have a compulsion to put things on their heads. Putting it on your head is fun! And, it provides a whole new sensory experience. Wearing a hat changes the weight and balance of your head, it does interesting things to peripheral vision if the object comes low enough. I've been a nanny and a preschool teacher and experience tells me it's a weird little human drive to put stuff on your head. I loved it when the kids would put purses on their heads as 'helmets'. Other things include books, pots, buckets, blankets, boots, and even chairs. Hilarity!

lol i picked "on my head" but given the item i might do a lot of weird stuff with it too. i do come from that section of alterna girls who love to stick weird stuff in their hair so that is usually my first thought.

I will often try to wear it as a tail if at all appropriate. But yes, usually a hat. I'm rather prone to putting just about anything i like on my head, including birthday gifts.

Barnacles make an extremely fetching head-cessory: just ask any seaward rock. I don't blame them one bit. :D

"Hat" isn't necessarily the right term, as while I'm inclined to put random things on my head, a lot of the time it's more that they're entwined in or pinned into my hair.

However, I'm also well-know for putting things on bodices, sleeves, and skirts, as well as turning them into other kinds of accessories (fans, parasols, masks) depending on my fancy.

All of the above, as I usually think "that would be great on a bellydance costume!". So bra, belt, headpiece and/or other accessory bits.
