Well, poop. I had planned to make available for free download a tutorial i've written on methods and materials for rubberizing shoe and boot soles. However, Filecrunch is undergoing maintenance so i guess i'll be posting about that at a future date. Instead, here are some links and images:

This month's Victoriana Magazine has a cool article on period jewelry, as well as an overview of footwear, complete with lovely photos of antique shoes

There's also a thread on the Carolina Belles' discussion forum on turning modern shoes into cloth button boots in a Victorian style (it continues on subsequent pages).



Here are a couple of images i neglected to post earlier; the first is a couple of antiques from our costume archive and the second depicts two more glove projects! I feel like i should apologize for the distinct lack of rickrack in this post. (There, i've said it, that should be enough.) :)

I love the military gaiters. Would one use a hook to do those up, then? (Also, those space gloves are such a 70s TV flashback!)

I'm not sure, periodwise, whether you'd have a hook on-hand in, say, the trenches. One of my students did them up using just her fingers!

It doesn't stand to reason that you'd need a hook but I was just trying to imagine doing them up with your fingers cold. :) Those are very interesting. I've loved reading your glove and shoe posts. It makes me curious to get out some of my sewing materials and give it a go. :)
