First off, i want to publically congratulate a couple of folks around work:

Joseph Haj, our artist director at PlayMakers Repertory Company, was just named as one of the nation's top 25 theatre artists by American Theatre magazine. As part of the magazine's 25th anniversary, they chose 25 theatre practitioners whom they predict will have the most significant impact on American theatre over the coming 25 years. Congratulations, Joe!

And, within our own department, 2nd-year graduate student Amy A. Page recently won the Marian A. Smith Award (and scholarship), presented by the Southeastern Theatre Conference to an outstanding graduate student in costume design or production. Our program's students have really dominated this scholarship of late, as Amy marks the third UNC-CH recipient in a row (the two previous years' scholarships were awarded to our grads Jacki Blakeney and M. Spencer Henderson). Congratulations, Amy!

In other news, I know i've been watching the fallout of the economic downturn smashing the regional theatre industry, but with the announcement last week of our ambitious 2009-10 season, i think PlayMakers has made a bold statement for our future: we're only cutting back the mainstage from 6 shows to 4 (or 5, depending on how you look at it) and retaining our entire second stage series. We're not losing any staff, nor are we booking a year of one-person-shows. I'm so proud to work for this company, especially its contrast in light of the choices many other theatres have made to deal with budget reductions.

The most exciting and daring thing on the roster, i think, is the two-part epic Nicholas Nickleby. If i were to really let myself go on about that play, i'd never shut up--my personal relationship with it goes back to watching the original 9-hour Royal Shakespeare Company production with my parents when i was younger, and the book is one of my favorite Charles Dickens novels. Okay, what does it say that i have more than one favorite Charles Dickens novel? But anyhow. I am SO excited for the opportunity to work on an actual production of the show, and i think PRC has some serious brass for mounting it at all: as far as i know, only one other regional US company has ever produced it--California Shakespeare--outside of its original Broadway/RSC run. And for me, a Dickens play (or, plays) means two things to look forward to, craftwise: bonnets and grime! I can't wait!

But, today my students turned in their resist projects, so i have some photos to share!
