McQueen-inspired footwear project
Dec. 1st, 2011 04:08 pmSuper busy right now with the end of the semester and the beginning of our repertory shows coming into the shop, but i cannot wait--i have to share these images of first-year graduate student Leah Pelz's complex footwear project from my decorative arts class, a shoe mod based on the Alexander McQueen lobster claw/armadillo shoes popularized by Lady Gaga!

Leah models her project shoes.

Another view.

Arch lacing detail.
Leah took a pair of platform stiletto-heel ankle boots and first built up the padded structure at the front, then reinforced the shape with Wonderflex thermoplastic to create a hard armored shell for the signature armadillo arch shape at the front of the style. You can see in this image of somewhat-the-worse-for-wear originals that the McQueen shoes have a rigid understructure at the fronts.
She used a faux-crocodile embossed leather to create the uppers, which rather than attempt to pry off and resole the shoe, she decided to Barge to the base boot and secure along the top opening with Jiffy rivets and under the arch with the cool lacing detail. Much like some of the McQueen designs, Leah's close up the center back of the heel with zippers she set in using our industrial patcher machines.
I'm just PO'd we don't wear the same shoe size! :)
