labricoleuse: (silk painting)
[personal profile] labricoleuse
My surface design students turned in their resist projects this week. I have a selection of three to share images of.

Second year grad Claire Fleming did this silk painting reproducing a stained glass design originally created by an artist in her family.

First year grad Nora Rogers screenprinted images of ice crystals with gutta onto silk, then combined silk paints and salt crystals to create this amazing piece.

Nora's preliminary sample swatch to test her paint/salt method.

First year grad Adrienne Corral created this silk painting based on a source image of a mosaic depicting an octopus.

All of these are beautiful work, but the ice-crystals piece is particularly amazing.

these are lovely, all of them, but the nora rogers pieces are mind boggling. perhaps you could describe her process a little more?

Nora used a Gocco print process to screenprint images of ice crystals onto the silk using a water based gutta resist. Then she wet the fabric, scattered salt crystals across it, and dropped two shades of silk paint randomly througout, so the resisted crystal shapes mingled with the dispersion of the paint that the salt crystals created. It's really stunning, isn't it? I love it!

She already owned the Gocco, so i admit i don't know its current availability.

I teach the EZScreenprint product as a fast way to screenprint, so that's another alternative to Gocco.
