I have two of my students' parasols to share with my readers today. I'm so proud!

vintage frame with restored canopy by Jacki Blakeney Armit

Jacki used a vintage frame in fine working condition to create this pagoda dome parasol of turquoise cotton and an heirloom fabric featuring various styles of bicycles. The frame had a slightly damaged floral canopy of the same basic shape, which Jacki used for inspiration in creating her new canopy.

vintage frame with restored canopy by Amy A. Page

detail of fabric and trim
Amy's vintage frame is also in fine working condition, and had a damaged but largely intact canopy of that shade of varigated burgandy that some old black dyes will fade to in time. Her new canopy is made from a cross-woven figured faille. Amy employed a Victorian handmade trim technique known as shell smocking using black velvet ribbon. She also made a thick pleated cockade to augment the parasol's spike from the same ribbon.
