labricoleuse: (dye vat)
[personal profile] labricoleuse
Hobby dyer and computer programmer/engineer Olli Niemitalo of Finland has a wonderful online color-blending applet for the Procion MX range of dyes (and a few others), Dye Mixer. You can use it to pre-test color mixing effects in a variety of applications--see what the dyes you have on hand can be combined to create, see what a certain color will achieve when layered over an extant ground color, etc. If you are a dabbly, "painter"-style dyer (as opposed to a measured, "chemist"-style dyer), this might save you some headaches and wasted dyestuff in color-mixing experiments! Chemist-style dyers will be able to observe more measured, exact results in a hypothetical setting.

Wow.

So. Cool. Should I link to you if I wanted to post this to the SCA list?

Awesome. Thanks so much. I'm sure it could be adapted for the stuff you get at the craft store if you aproximated swatches during process.

Sweet.

Yes, and Mr. Neimitalo offers to add a new dye, light, or canvas if you provide him with its spectrum information. He says, If you are unable to locate a spectrophotometer, you could also send me a sample of the dye. I don't know the potential legalities of mailing dyestuff samples overseas though.
