Dyeing: Random Images & Links!
Dec. 1st, 2006 04:46 pmI'm doing this research project at work right now, investigating the range of different options for reflooring our dye-shop with grating. The current floor is a sprung floor with sporadic drainage, which poses a range of cleaning problems and creates a slip hazard whenever anything spills. I was surfing around looking for any photographs of other dye shops that might have this type of floor (i've seen it mostly in opera and ballet dye facilities), and happened upon a trove of links and images i thought i'd share.
Here is an excellent article on the dye shop of the Royal Opera House in the UK.
This history page for the Penland School of Crafts has a great photo of 1930s dyers stirring a vat!
Here are some beautiful (and occasionally disturbing to the safety-conscious) images of dyeshops across the world:

10-kilo sacks of dyestuff in Udaipur, photographed by Steve Bruntlett
Dye pots in Bangkok, photographed by Tim May
